“Since the early sixties, every Thursday afternoon the LL&L market on 814 Scott Street in Memphis was John McFerren’s last shopping stop. It was an indoor-outdoor market where people bought and sold goods. On this one ominous afternoon around 5:15 pm on April 4, 1968, something unexpected happened. While pulling his usual weekly order, McFerren overheard one of the owners, Frank Liberto, giving orders for when and where to shoot someone. John McFerren was simply at the wrong place at the wrong time. McFerren knew the conversation did not pertain to him. The wise forty-three-year-old well-seasoned civil rights pioneer continued shopping, minding his own business.

Once John McFerren arrived back in Somerville, events took a turn for an unexpected worst-case scenario. His wife, Viola, told her husband about the breaking news Dr. Martin Luther King was shot and killed while standing on the balcony at the Lorraine motel. It was at that moment John McFerren
reflected on the conversation he overheard just a few hours ago. Three days later, against his wife’s advice, John McFerren came forward. In the late hours of Sunday night at the Memphis Peabody Hotel John McFerren told the authorities what he had heard and saw on the day King was killed. The overall outcome was the FBI would change McFerren’s statement without his knowledge. If those changes had not been made, all eyes would be now on the powerful West Tennessee Democrat State Senator John Shelton Wilder and his long time business partner Frank Liberto…”
